HISTORY OF THE PONDERA COUNTY
CONSERVATION DISTRICT
The
Pondera County Soil Conservation District’s formation began in January
1945 under the direction of many Pondera County residents concerned
about protecting the county’s soil and water resources.
On
June 5, 1945 voters approved the Conservation District formation.
Certification of the district as an organized governmental subdivision
was signed on July 27, 1945.
Now
called the Pondera County Conservation District (PCCD), the Board of
Supervisors consists of five volunteers elected to 4-year terms and two
urban supervisors appointed to 3-year terms.
Funding for the PCCD comes from a maximum of 1.5 mills levied on real
property within the district. To adequately meet expenses, the PCCD must
also seek funding through state and federal grants as well as other
innovative sources.
As a
close partner of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the
PCCD is located at the USDA Service Center in Conrad. The PCCD works
with NRCS to bring together individuals, government agencies and private
sectors to encourage proper conservation of natural resources.
The
Conservation District is here to educate, inform, and serve the
residents of Pondera County, both rural and urban. For more information
contact the District office at (406) 278-7611 ext 101.
